ADHD and Social Skills
ADHD is a common
neurodevelopmental condition that significantly impacts a child’s capacity to
regulate their attention, and/or impulses, and/or activity level. According to
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nine percent of U.S. children between
the ages of 3 and 17 have an ADHD diagnosis.ADHD can affect a child’s
social success. For example, difficulty focusing and sustaining attention can
result in missing social cues, forgetting conversations, and failing to notice

Your Child Disagrees with You… Now What?
If your children are anything like mine, you know that from
time to time (and some days it definitely feels like ALL THE TIME), they are
going to disagree with you. When that happens, how tolerant are you? Do you try
to hear them out, or do you immediately shut them down? Can you engage in a give-and-take
dialogue, or do you fall into the trap of a lose-lose shout fest?
Moms and dads who adhere to a more authoritarian,
my-way-or-the-highway parenting philosophy may have little patienc

Part 2: How to Teach Social Skills
After exploring how social skills help us make connections,
foster a sense of belonging, and strengthen our social-emotional health ( see Part 1 ), let’s take a step back and examine how, exactly, we can help kids learn
and use these skills so they can succeed in the classroom, at home, and in our community.

Part 1: Social Skills Can Expand (and Limit) Life’s
OpportunitiesWhen you hear the phrase “social skills,” you probably think
about all the verbal and nonverbal actions and behaviors that happen while
interacting with others. Your words. Their words. Your tone. Their tone. Your
gestures. Their gestures. Your appearance. Their appearance. All the stuff that
comes together and contributes to the success or failure of an interaction. Being human, we’re naturally social beings. However, the

Value of Face-to-Face Connections
In today's digital world, it's common for scenarios like this to play out: A teenage girl comes into the kitchen obviously upset. When her dad asks what's wrong, she says she is having a fight with a friend who said hurtful things to her.Her dad can't believe the friend would say some of the things his daughter told him about. For proof, she takes out her cell phone so he can "read" the argument. The entire thing was happening via text messages, and they hadn't actually spoken about the problem

Four Considerations for When to Seek Services for Your Child
We’ve all heard or been a part of conversations like this,
which is why it can be hard as a parent to know when the right time is to start
helping or have an evaluation for your child. While kids’ academics are
monitored closely and there’s readily available data to show when there is a
deficit, other areas like social skills fall into a grey area. Many parents
aren’t sure what exactly the norm is, and they don’t want to take away their
child’s individuality. While it’s true that you

Practice on the Go
We all have busy lives. Between sports practice, running
errands or finally taking that road trip, it often feels like there isn’t time
for everything. Something has to give. Usually, that something is the extra
social skills practice or speech homework. However, don’t work harder, work
smarter. Language and social skills are actually some of the easiest pieces to
incorporate when you are on the go. In fact, you’re probably already doing it
to an extent without knowing it.
Here are fo

Empathy: Walking a Mile in Someone's Shoes
When I was
a graduate student, I spent a number of hours observing other school counselors
conducting classroom guidance lessons. One memorable lesson involved a
counselor who used the idiom, “Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his
shoes.” The lesson was designed to introduce the concept of empathy to first
graders. While the students seemed to enjoy the lesson, there was still some
confusion regarding the concept. Some even took the idiom literally. I can only
imagine the interest

5 Social Skills Every Teacher Can (and Should) Teach
Visit any school in the country and it would be unusual
to not see this posted somewhere in the building.
These words are a reminder of the effects teachers
have – effects they may never have the opportunity to
actually see.
And, while teachers understand the importance of the
academic skills their students need to master, the
importance of social and emotional competencies is becoming increasingly evident. To fulfill this need, many
educators are becoming acutely aware of the need for t

When the Parent Becomes the Therapist
The
world-wide pandemic changed many things in our lives. One of those big changes
was school closures which thrust parents into a new role as educator and
therapist. This may seem scary and you
may want to react in a big way. When you stop to think about it, as a parent
you are one of the best possible teachers for your children. Not only do you know them so well but you
spend many more hours a day with them.
Instead of just thirty minutes of language or social skills practice,
